Who ate all the Pies? The Debt Mystery

I have a very good friend. He has a degree in accountancy and is good with numbers and exudes common sense.

Which then brings me to what happened to him when he immersed himself in Nationalism? In 2014 Tom used to relish telling me just how much debt the UK had and how it was a good reason to vote for Independence. Unfortunately for Tom, despite having a degree in accountancy, he’d never actually read the accounts

He still, to this day, has never read the accounts, despite reading accounts all day for a living. This is what Nationalism does to you. Had Tom read the accounts this is what he would have found

These are from the ONS Country and Regional public sector finance dataset. They show quite clearly who has run up the UK’s debt over a twenty year period from 1999 to 2019.

You can quite clearly see that England is doing really really well in getting it’s debt down whereas the rUK has been treading water for years and years and years with high debt and underperforming economies.

So. The next time someone asks you ‘Who ate all the pies?’ you’ll know exactly who to blame.
